  • With the different technological developments since the turn of the 20th century, the visual representation of Arabic letter design witnessed a setback in its evolution. Arabic and Islamic calligraphy has a long and rich visual heritage that developed over more than a thousand years in varied geographies across continents, dynasties and cultures, unfortunately the same cannot be said for Arabic type design. This presentation will highlight the work of some of the most significant calligraphers and type designers and how, in spite of the difficulties, the development of Arabic calligraphic tradition and type design is still ongoing.
  • مع التطور التكنولوجي في مجالات عدة، ومع بداية القرن العشرين، شهد التمثيل البصري لتصميم الحرف العربي تراجعًا في تطوره. يحمل فنَ الخط العربي والإسلامي إرثًا بصريًا كبيرًا وغنيًا تّطور على مدار أكثر من ألف سنة بخصائص متنوعة وعلى مستوى القارات، والسلالات، والحضارات المتعددة. لكن مع الأسف، لم ينطبق الأمر نفسه على تصميم الخط الطباعي العربي. سيسلّط هذا العرض الضوء على أعمال أهم الخطَاطين ومصممي الخطوط الطباعية وكيف استمر تطوير الخط العربي بالرغم من الصعوبات.
  • Bahia Shehab is an artist and author based in Cairo. She is Professor of design and founder of the graphic design program at The American University in Cairo. Her work has been exhibited internationally and has received a number of international awards including the BBC’s 100 women’s list, a TED Senior Fellowship, a Prince Claus Award, and the UNESCO-Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture. She is the founding director of TypeLab@AUC. Her latest publications include You Can Crush the Flowers: A Visual Memoir of the Egyptian Revolution and the award winning co-authored book A History of Arab Graphic Design.
  • بهية شهاب فنانة وكاتبة مقرّها القاهرة، وهي أستاذة جامعية في التصميم ومؤسِسة برنامج التصميم الغرافيكي في الجامعة الأميركية في القاهرة. عُرضت أعمالها في متاحف ومعارض وشوارع العالم. حصلت على عدد من التقديرات والجوائز العالمية بما فيها ظهورها على قائمة BBC لأكثر 100 امرأة ملهمة ومؤثرة لعام 2013، برنامج زمالة TED لعام 2016، وجائزة برينس كلوز لعام 2016. هي المرأة العربية الأولى التي تحصل على جائزة اليونسكو – الشارقة للثقافة العربية. تحمل شهاب درجة الدكتوراه من جامعة ليدن في هولندا. تتضمن منشوراتها «لا ألف مرة: التاريخ البصري لحرفي اللام والألف»، «على ناصية الحلم» كما شاركت في ٳعداد كتاب «تاريخ التصميم الغرافيكي العربي».
